Description

I enjoy creating art using a restricted palette. This valley on the Rhine river – ‘Between Boppard and St Goar’ – in Germany, really activated my creativity here. The colours used were (from memory) white, yellow ochre, Prussian blue and burnt umber.

On the day, the afternoon light was filtering down the valley through a thin cloud cover, and I liked the idea of dramatising that.

I have astigmatism in both eyes, and despite wearing glasses, what I see in my mind and what I create don’t usually have the same ‘lines’, hence the bend in the river wall. The real river wall is much straighter than that. (Conversely, I often end up with flat spots in my paintings where they should bend … grrrr …)

Like so many of my acrylic paintings, this one was completed using old credit and sim cards to apply the paint – no brushes were harmed in its making.

Acrylic on stretched canvas, ready to hang.
