Transcription services

Transcription is the act of typing up the words you hear from a recording. For some people, it’s easier to record on a phone, say, than trying to type something up or write it by hand.

If it’s easier for you to record your stories rather than write or type them up, or if you’re interviewing family members for your family history research, I can transcribe those recordings for you, delivering a Word document that you can add to, edit, combine with other Word docs – whatever you need it for.

I have a foot pedal which allows me to stop and start the recording or slow it down so that I can keep up with what’s being said. However, a transcriber has to listen to a full recording at least twice, and will have to replay certain parts of it several times to be sure of what’s being said, so it’s a time-consuming task, meaning it’s not cheap. Please visit my Rates page to get a handle on how much your transcription might cost you.

If you would like any recordings transcribed, however, I’d love to hear from you. Please reach out via my Contact page and let me know:

  • what sort of recording it is (e.g. someone else, you, family history, a novel, etc.)
  • roughly how long the recording is
  • if there’s anything special about it (e.g. more than 2 people, foreign accents, background noise), and
  • when you’d need it by.

I’ll get in touch, possibly ask you to send it through so I can have a quick listen (to make sure I’m not biting off more than I can chew!), and if we agree to work together, then I’ll require a 50% deposit (based on the length of the recording) with the balance payable upon completion.
