Description
Bowl 14 – Crowning Glory celebrates so much – the joy of colour and rainbows, mathematics (not that I could quite get the maths right for this display), history and stamps. It would make a dedicated philatelist cry, but would thrill a dedicated monarchist as it’s made from the Machin head stamps of my father’s stamp collection – the collection I held onto after his death, thinking that one day I’d get it sorted. After two decades I realised that was never going to happen, but I had loved the Machin heads, so I kept those and let the rest go to an active collector. (You can read more about Machin heads and their history here: https://www.postalmuseum.org/discover/collections/machin-design/)
So here we have a variety of prices and postal classes – not all columns bear exactly the same face value stamp, nor exactly the same colour, but it’s interesting to look at the various postmarks and how they sometimes seem to connect with the next column, even though that was never intended.
I realised that someone may wish to hang this bowl, rather than use it flat, so I’ve fitted it with three ‘feet’. (Having three feet allows it to sit evenly on a flat surface.) A d-ring (which will be supplied with the bowl) can be screwed into the foot above the bowl’s name, without piercing through the bottom of the bowl, and then it can be put on a picture hook.
The background is gold acrylic paint, and I felt that the outside needed to be left plain – adding anything there just felt like I was overdoing it.
So far, this is my crowning glory of a bowl! While I’m particularly attached to a quite a few of my bowls and don’t always want to see them leave the fold, this one I particularly love looking at. And will probably shed a tear when it does find a new home!
PLEASE NOTE:
- Lollies, candy etc. are for perspective purposes only – item ships without these. (Basically because they’d be really, really stale by the time you received them!)
- Price includes shipping within Australia. If you’re overseas, a $15 surcharge will apply once you enter your shipping address to help cover the additional shipping costs.

This series of papier mache bowls is created from self-supporting papier mache, bar the base which has been strengthened with a piece of recycled corrugated cardboard.
All bowls are made from a combination of recycled office and other paper, and some contain new paper for decorative purposes. The occasional bowl will also incorporate other media such as beads etc. The bowls are created using PVA glue and/or Bondcrete and are sealed with at least three coats of Cabot’s Benchtop Clear food safe varnish.
Each bowl is unique.
The bowls are decorative only – while they are sealed and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, they should not be immersed in any liquid, nor should they be placed in the dishwasher, oven or microwave.
While they’ve been sealed with a food safe varnish, I don’t recommend using them as a storage bowl for fruit where the skin is intended to be eaten e.g. plums, apples, grapes etc. Thicker skin which will be peeled should be okay e.g. oranges, bananas, rockmelon etc.
No bowl is completely round, nor completely flat. While the structure starts off reasonably straight, it slowly takes on its own dents and warps as it grows.
