Description

‘Little China Bowl’ was inspired by a bundle of what I thought might be serviettes or paper napkins or perhaps some sort of food wrapping for use in Chinese takeaway shops, which I bought many years ago in a clearance store for about one dollar a bundle. They are yellow with a red pattern and a piece of gold leaf, and seem to heave been printed individually as the pattern tends to shift as I work through the pile, and the gold leaf and orange backing also shift position slightly from sheet to sheet.

After working with them on this bowl, I reckon they were discarded as not fit for purpose – the red dye just spread everywhere when the sheets became wet with the paste! I can imagine having it spread to your dim sims or your spring rolls – would have really put you off the eating …

But as I made this bowl, I kept thinking of David Bowie’s ‘China Girl’, and found myself continuously singing ‘little china bowl’ as my own kind of deliberate mondegreen! I also liked the irony of referring to a papier mache bowl as a china bowl, so that’s where the name came from. And now that you’re probably singing it, here’s a clip of one of the most stylish men ever to walk the planet. Enjoy!

Like my ‘Beer Nuts‘ and ‘Tartan Around‘ mini bowls, ‘Little China Bowl’ is also perfect for beer nuts! And people who are nuts about beer, of course. If you do plan to use this for your nuts, then I recommend lining it with a paper napkin/serviette first, just to protect both the bowl and your nuts from each other. 🙂

The alternative is a Christmassy mix of Minties, or M&Ms, or other sweets in your favourite Christmas colours – just make sure they’re wrapped, to protect both the bowl and the lolly.

PLEASE NOTE:

  • Lollies, candy etc. are for perspective purposes only – item ships without these. (Basically because they’d be really, really stale by the time you received them!)
  • Price includes shipping within Australia. If you’re overseas, a $15 surcharge will apply once you enter your shipping address to help cover the additional shipping costs.

This series of papier mache bowls is created from self-supporting papier mache, bar the base which has been strengthened with a piece of recycled corrugated cardboard.

All bowls are made from a combination of recycled office and other paper, and some contain new paper for decorative purposes. The occasional bowl will also incorporate other media such as beads etc. The bowls are created using PVA glue, Bondcrete and acrylic sealer.

Each bowl is unique.

The bowls are decorative only – while they are sealed and can be wiped clean with a damp cloth, they should not be immersed in any liquid, nor should they be placed in the dishwasher, oven or microwave.

While they’ve been sealed, I don’t recommend using them as a storage bowl for fruit where the skin is intended to be eaten e.g. plums, apples, grapes etc. Thicker skin which will be peeled should be okay e.g. oranges, bananas, rockmelon etc.

No bowl is completely round, nor completely flat. While the structure starts off reasonably straight, it slowly takes on its own dents and warps as it grows.
