Opals – Light

Description

Like its companion pieces, Opals – Dark and Love Me Do, ‘Opals – Light’ is a work using negative space.

Created from a lesson in a magazine, I started by spreading loose, light watercolours across an A3 sheet of watercolour paper. Once that was dry, I drew adjoining circles and ellipses with a black watercolour pencil, then coloured in the gaps between the circles with the black watercolour pencil.

I then used a brush and water to blend the black pencil strokes and darken the background further, adding black over that to get the required depth of colour that I was after.

‘Opals – Light’ was created on watercolour paper and measures 42 cm wide and 29.7 cm high. There is a black border around the ‘opals’ and then a further border of roughly 1 cm so plenty of room for matting and framing.
